Course Objectives

The lab focuses on the main aspects of power distribution and utilization of electrical engineering. The main aspects covered in this lab include the dissection of cable, cable size selection, maximum load limits etc. The lab also gives insight of distribution transformer, power factor improvement and electrical wiring for energy utilization at consumer end.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)

CLO:1. Use measuring instruments to measure high level voltage, current and resistance. The lab will also enable the students to choose appropriate cable size for a given load. (Level: P1)
CLO:2. Express knowledge of distribution transformer, one-line diagram construction and power factor improvement. (Level: C2)
CLO:3. Make connection in home electrical wiring from services mains to different distribution boards and electrical points (Level: P1).

1 Familiarization with Parts of power cable.
2 Cable Size Calculation for a given load.
3 Measuring High Level Voltage, Current and Resistance using Instrument Transformers
4 Measuring High Level Voltage, Current and Resistance using Megger
5 Operation and constructional features of a Distribution Transformer.
6 Familiarization of Substation Equipments and understanding its one-line diagram.
7 Implementation of Power Factor Improvement Techniques Part-I
8 Implementation of Power Factor Improvement Techniques Part-II
9 Familiarization with different types of lamps & comparing the Illuminance level.
10 Calculation of charges in Industrial/commercial bill.
11 Captive Power Generation (DG Set Diesel Generating Set).
12 Home Electrical Wiring
13 Familiarization with Chemical Batteries; Cathodic Protection of Poles
14 Earth Resistance and Soil Resistivity Measurement
