Course Objectives

1. To enhance the skills related to bearing capacity and settlement evaluation of soils. 2. To apply principles of soil mechanics to engineering problems pertaining to retaining structures, foundations and embankments.

Course Contents

Classification of soil by ASTM method.

To determine the bearing capacity of soil by plate load test.

To collect sub surface information by using standard penetration test.

To determine (Shear strength parameters) the strength and stress strain relationship of soil by triaxial compression test.

To determine (Shear strength parameters) the strength and stress strain relationship of soil by shear box test.

To determine (Shear strength parameters) the strength and stress strain relationship of soil by unconfined compression test.

To determine (Shear strength parameters) the strength and stress strain relationship of soil by vane shear test.

To determine the modulus of compressibility, compression index, pre-consolidation pressure and coefficient of consolidation by odometer test.
