ASME Water Rocket Competition - 2016
Capital University of Science and Technology Islamabad has a chartered student section of American Society of Mechanical Engineers. ASME student section organized its annual “Water Rocket Competition” on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 in university ground.
Forty-four students from various departments of university registered for this competition. Engr. Saif Ullah, Assistant Professor, ME Department supervised the event. Dr. Saif ur Rahman and Dr. Khawar Naveed were the judges for this competition. Participating students were given the task to prepare rockets while using plastic bottles. They were allowed to improve its aerodynamic features using cardboard and paper sheets. Students experimented with all kinds of designs, which not only reduced the air drag, but also improved its aesthetics. The rocket launchers were prepared by the organizing team and were available for practice to all contestants for the whole week. The organizing team consisted of Nabeel, Saad, Arhaam, Zain, Suleman, Ali, Usama and Ahmed Abbas.
The event started at 11 am. A number of faculty members were present for the encouragement of the contestants in this healthy and creative activity. Students from all departments participated in the event. Due to higher number of participants, each contestant was given two chances to fly the water rocket and the distance of flight was recorded by the organizing team. Two rockets crossed the university boundary wall also. Mr. Adul Rehman’s rocket travelled more than 350 feet and won the competition followed by Mr. Shan Ibrahim with a distance of 316 feet and remained runner-up. Mr. Saad ur Rehman clinched the third position.
All water rockets were examined by the judges for the best design and Mr. Shahid Ali was declared the recipient of the ‘Best Design’ award.
