Seminar on “ICANN Functionality and DNSSEC Awareness”
The Department of Electronic Engineering and CoReNeT research group at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad organized a seminar on “ICANN Functionality and DNSSEC Awareness” which was conducted by Dr. Naveed Bin Rais, Assistant Professor (EE), on December 04, 2014. The objective of the seminar was to help ICANN in its outreach program to aware more and more people from all sectors of the society about how Internet is functioned and governed. The seminar was specifically aimed at the organization and functioning of domain names and Internet addresses. There were two sessions of 80 minutes each in the 3-hour long seminar. Dr. Naveed Bin Rais delivered a talk on ICANN Functionality, its multi-stakeholder model and the Internet ecosystem in the first session. He also highlighted on the importance of getting engaged in the processes of ICANN and ISOC, and encouraged the participants to apply for different programs that ICANN and ISOC are offering for the community. The second session of the seminar was conducted by Dr. Richard Lamb (Senior Program Manager, ICANN) on video link using Adobe Connect. He described the reason of using secure domain names and how to get them achieved within the framework of the Internet. His talk was also broadcasted via live stream and 4 attendees joined the seminar online. The seminar received very good attendance as there were 40 attendees from different universities, organizations, and government sector.
The seminar was a success and the participants gave a very positive feedback. They also mentioned that the seminar helped them to get to know about the overall functioning and management of the Internet number systems. They also requested the organizers to hold regular seminar on similar subjects, especially to hold a workshop on DNSSEC.
