HISTORY MADE BY DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, CUST

Three groups of 3rd year civil engineering students of CUST evaluated the construction practices of brick masonry structures, RCC buildings, and pine-needle reinforced mud houses and submitted their work to Annual Australian Earthquake Engineering Society Conference 2017. A history is being made with the acceptance of these papers because no 3rd year engineering student has ever submitted the work to a well reputed international conference in 70 years history of Pakistan.

All students are extremely happy with this awesome achievement. Such a great success is not only the output of their hard work, but also the motivation in difficult times near deadlines, strictness in ensuring the high quality work and the vision of taking international standard work from 3rd year students by their supervisor Engr. Dr. Majid Ali. Now being in final year, this attainment has affirmed the intentions of students to take respective work in further detail as their design projects. Group 1 (Kainat Batool and Gulelalah Ayaz) did work on “Seismic vulnerability assessment of brick masonry houses with street survey in developing countries”, group 2 (Amir Hayat, Hamza Khan and Riaz ul Haq) did work on “Use of pine-needle reinforced composites in Kashmir, Pakistan – A critical review”, and group 3 (Sania Tariq and Shughla Ismail) did work on “Seismic risk assessment of residential rcc buildings with street survey in urban areas of developing countries”. Students are hopeful to have more brilliant work from their design projects.

According to their supervisor Engr. Dr. Majid Ali, it is a tremendous output from the volunteer effort of students in 3rd year when students usually don’t bother to do much. A supervisor cannot take work forcefully. Similar kind of achievement was made last year by a MS student Engr. Mehran Khan when he published an ISI impact factor paper in his first year of masters study. He is aiming to have more remarkable outputs from undergraduate students in future.
