Introduction

The Career Service Office (CSO) at the Capital University of Science and Technology (CUST) essentially functions for the constructive professional growth of students and alumni. In addition, it serves as a fundamental entity for the guidance of students and alumni, by bridging the gap between academic learning and employment market trends. CSO plays an important role in assisting students by focusing on employer engagement and on-going professional development.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CAREER SERVICES OFFICE (CSO)

CSO plays a crucial role in empowering students for successful transitions into professional life by connecting them with the corporate sector. It builds relationships with companies, recognizes students’ competencies, and conducts workshops on employability skills. The organization emphasizes personal branding and equal access to internships and job opportunities. Additionally, it raises awareness of career options and guides students in identifying their objectives, aiming to enhance job readiness and entrepreneurial skills among graduates at CUST.

GOALS

(a) Enhance Career Readiness Programs: Develop and deliver workshops, training sessions, and certifications that equip students and alumni with essential employability and soft skills.

(b) Strengthen Industry Partnerships: Establish and expand collaborations with leading industry partners to facilitate internships, mentorships, and employment opportunities.

(c) Expand Alumni Engagement Initiatives: Create structured platforms to actively involve alumni in career development, mentoring, and networking opportunities for current students.

(d) Implement Comprehensive Career Support Services: Offer individualized career counselling, resume building, job search assistance, and interview preparation to ensure holistic support.

(e) Facilitate Experiential Learning Opportunities: Promote and manage co-op programs, industry-sponsored projects, and research collaborations to give students hands-on experience.

(f) Create a Robust Career Tracking and Analytics System: Develop mechanisms to monitor career outcomes and use data-driven insights to continuously improve career services.

(g) Promote a Culture of Professional Excellence: Encourage continuous self-improvement, ethics, leadership, and innovation among students through seminars, competitions, and recognition programs.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

CSO aims to empower students and alumni to achieve their career goals by providing comprehensive services. Our objectives include building relationships with employers and alumni, enhancing employability skills and personal branding, providing career guidance and job opportunities, and fostering core competencies and confidence in students.

CAREER COUNSELING

CSO provides comprehensive career counseling services to support students in making informed career decisions, setting realistic goals, and navigating their professional journeys effectively.

FUNCTIONS

(a) Facilitates students with one-to-one sessions to assess their strengths, interests, and potential career paths.

(b) Career interest assessments are conducted using psychometric tests and self-assessment tools to guide students towards suitable career fields.

(c) CSO develops a Student Career Life Cycle to provide career development support and guidance to students. This approach is tailored to meet the unique needs of students at different stages of their academic program.

(d) Responsible for providing valuable data on job market demands, emerging skills, and hiring trends to align career choices with industry needs.

(e) The team assists students in reviewing resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles to enhance job application success.

(f) Arranges mock interview sessions with structured feedback to evaluate the readiness of CUST candidates for real-market entry.

Capacity Building & Training Sessions

CSO offers capacity building training sessions to help students make smooth transition into job market. These trainings, mainly, include resume writing, LinkedIn networking, interview skills and work ethics. However, these trainings can be adjusted to industry needs.

Job and Internship Search Support

CSO provides structured support to students and alumni in searching, applying, and securing job & internship opportunities through a combination of resources, expert guidance, and employer partnerships.

Networking Opportunities

CSO facilitates networking opportunities for students to connect with professionals, alumni, and potential employers. Office organizes networking events such as career fairs i.e., NextGen Corporate and CUST Industry Sumit every year, Job recruitment drives, industry panel talks, and networking dinners to foster connections between students, Alumni & professionals.

Alumni Engagement

CSO maintains an active relationship with alumni to foster their engagement in supporting current students’ career development. Office establishes and promotes an alumnus networking program where alumni can provide guidance, advice, and professional networking opportunities to current students.

Corporate Exposure Programs

CSO arranges visits to companies and organizations in collaboration with academic departments to provide students with firsthand exposure to different work environments and career opportunities. Office plays a key role in enhancing Industry awareness. CSO exposes students to corporate environments, industry trends, and workplace expectations.

EMPLOYER SERVICES

CSO provides a range of employer services designed to connect organizations with qualified candidates. The office establishes and maintains relationships with employers to create opportunities for student internships, job placements etc.

The CSO establishes long-term partnerships with industry leaders, corporations, and professional organizations to enhance employment opportunities for students. These collaborations are formalized through Memorandums of Understanding (MoU).

EVALUATION and ASSESSMENT

CSO outlines the strategies for promoting services, events, and resources through diverse channels, ensuring widespread awareness and accessibility. Ultimately, the goal is to evaluate the overall activities and drive participation in career development opportunities through essential surveys and feedbacks

Student and Employer Feedback Mechanisms

CSO implements feedback mechanisms to gather input from students and employers to assess the effectiveness of its services and make improvements through Alumni and Employer Feedback Surveys.

DEPARTMENTAL COLLABORATION

Departmental collaboration is essential for integrating career development into the academic fabric of the university. This involves building strong relationships with departments to embed career exploration, ultimately enhancing student readiness for the workforce by the help of mutual efforts.

Collaboration with Academic Departments

CSO plans and propose career development and job readiness activities in collaboration with Alumni Office Bearers (AOBs) of each academic department. AOBs provides input and departmental insights to ensure the alignment of activities with student needs and academic priorities.

COMMUNICATION

Effective communication is vital for connecting with students, alumni, and employers, ensuring they are aware of and can access career services. This section of the manual details the strategies for clear, consistent communication across all the platforms of CSO, fostering transparency and building strong relationships within the university community and Organizations.

OBJECTIVES

(a) To establish standardized and transparent communication protocols within CSO to ensure consistency and clarity.

(b) To facilitate effective engagement with external stakeholders for placements, surveys, events, and collaborative initiatives.

(c) To ensure the timely and accurate dissemination of information to students, industry partners, and relevant university departments.

COMMUNICATION

(a) CSO uses official university email for formal communication, including announcements, updates, and document sharing (career.services@cust.edu.pk).

(b) Regular team meetings are held to discuss progress, updates, and challenges.

(c) Formal memos, emails, official WhatsApp group messages, meeting minutes, and physical or virtual meetings are used for departmental communication within the university.

(d) CSO utilizes official WhatsApp, Meta, and LinkedIn groups for announcements and communication.

(e) Professional phone calls may also be conducted to establish contact with external stakeholders.

(f) The university website features comprehensive information about CSO, its services, newsletters, and upcoming events.
