20 Qualities of a Good Leader You Can Learn at University

During your study at a university, you might get the chance to lead a team or a discussion. In this context, developing 20 qualities of a good leader is essential. In fact, having excellent leadership skills can help you succeed in your career. Yes, learning about leadership qualities can help you develop and apply these skills in your future workplace. So, let’s explore this further! 

Why Do We Need Effective Leaders at University? 

We all know that effective leaders play a significant role in any company. This happens during university as well. An effective leader can drive more engagement, boost morale, and contribute to overall team success.  

Simon Sinek wrote in his book that leadership is not about being in charge. Instead, leadership is more about taking care of those in your charge. Accordingly, good leaders understand the importance of empowering their teams and using team skills to help each team member during study. With the right leadership skills and excellent qualities of a good leader, you can collaborate effectively to gain better results. 

What Are the 20 Qualities of a Good Leader You Should Learn? 

In brief, to be an effective leader, you need to learn specific skills including a combination of soft and technical skills. Learning and developing these leadership skills will enable you to navigate the complexities of leadership. Better yet, by being a good leader, you can inspire your team to achieve mutual goals.

1. Accountability 

The first and most important leadership qualities you should learn is accountability. You should be able to take responsibility for your team’s work and your own. 

2. Effective Communication  

Communication involves both listening and speaking. To be a good leader, not only should you communicate your ideas clearly. More than that, you should also actively listen to your team members. In addition, you should value their opinions and implement open dialogue. This way, you can create an environment of trust and collaboration within your team. 

3. Creative Thinking 

Being a good leader requires you to develop ideas, solve problems, and complete some tasks. To do all these, you must have innovative ideas and creative thinking. Furthermore, you must actively open to the different perspectives of your team members. Then, you can motivate them to think creatively or consider new perspectives. 

4. Team Building 

As an effective leader, you must promote teamwork and collaboration within your team. 

5. Active Listening 

You can practice active listening at university by minimizing distractions when having conversations with your classmates. Also, you must let them know that you are interested by using non-verbal cues and show your understanding.

6. Emotional Intelligence 

Emotional intelligence is also popular as one of the essential qualities of a good leader. This quality includes the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions, both your own and those of others. Ultimately, by improving your emotional intelligence, you can effectively communicate with empathy and promote positive teamwork. 

7. Problem-solving Skills 

Problem-solving is not only about finding solutions. Further than that, it’s also about implementing those solutions effectively. This is why problem-solving skills are included as one of the 20 qualities of a good leader. As a great leader, you must have the capability to translate your ideas into actionable plans. This way, you can drive the successful execution of solutions. 

8. Collaboration 

Good collaboration as one of 20 qualities of a good leader involves prioritising communication between team members. By doing this, you can ensure your goals are aligned.  

9. Empathy 

To be a good leader, you must understand how your team members feel about projects, decisions, and team vision. This means you must show empathy by recognising and considering their feelings.

10. Courage 

Effective leaders should have the courage to do what’s best for the team.  

11. A Development Mindset 

As a leader, you will do well when you adopt a development mindset. As circumstances often change when completing a project, you need a development mindset to tackle challenges.

12. Focus 

One of the most reliable qualities of a good leader is to focus on setting a practical vision and achievable targets.

13. Flexibility 

Being flexible can help you adapt to changes in your project’s expectations. Even better, you can adjust your strategy for achieving goals.

14. Optimism 

Be optimistic and show that you believe your team is working toward a better result. This also means that you should value your team members’ contributions to achieve that result.

15. Keep Learning 

Big leaders are effective when they stay knowledgeable of trends and the topics they are leading.

16. Passion 

You can motivate your team by demonstrating your passion in completing a project. This includes being passionate about mutual goals and creating unity among your team to work together.

17. Resilience 

Resilience is a key leadership quality that will set you apart. When facing some challenges, you must remain resilient and adaptable. By doing this, you can motivate your team members to persevere and overcome obstacles.

18. Self-awareness 

To accomplish the qualities of a good leader, you should have self-awareness to understand your own abilities and limitations.  

19. Patience 

Besides being passionate, a leader should know that mistakes, miscommunications, and failures are parts of teamwork. Hence, having patience can help your team overcome the errors they might have made.

20. Transparency 

Being open and honest makes teamwork more efficient and enjoyable. To be a good leader, you must be transparent about your decisions and actions to your teams.
