COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course hospital pharmacy aims to make the student able to recognize the pharmacist administrative and technical services in the hospital. This comprises hospital administration, patient care activities and pharmacist technical services in hospital including basic and special drug therapy. Participating in the hospital’s medication distribution systems. Performing calculations, compounding preparations, dispensing, manipulation of IV admixtures and preventing incompatibilities during therapy. The course also aims to educate the students about the real role of a pharmacist in Hospital along with the roles that he is required to play in the distribution, storage and purchase of drugs in hospital. The role of Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee and the advantages of small scale manufacturing in hospital need to be highlighted.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)

CLO: 1. To illustrate the manufacturing bulk and sterile and its central supply processes, the aseptic dispensing and role of hospital pharmacist, different sections and departments of hospital pharmacy, and hospital administration, patient care activities and pharmacist technical services in hospital.
CLO: 2. To apply the knowledge regarding manufacturing, dispensing, purchasing, distribution and control of hospital medicines, medical and surgical supplies, management of accident and emergency pharmacy in compliance with established standards to meet specific patients’ needs.
CLO: 3. To relate knowledge of basic concepts of hospital pharmacy to various managerial, administrative and dispensing activities in the hospital pharmacy.

  1. MANUFACTURING BULK AND STERILE
  2. THE PHARMACY; CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY ROOM
  3. ASEPTIC DISPENSING:
    • TPN, I/V admixtures, cytotoxic dispensing, semi-sterile dispensing (eye drops, ear drops) and hyperalimentation.
  4. ROLE OF PHARMACIST IN SMALL HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES
  5. PURCHASING, DISTRIBUTION AND CONTROL OF HOSPITAL MEDICINES, MEDICAL & SURGICAL SUPPLIES:
    • Purchasing, stocking, stock control, inventory management, drug distribution, relationship between purchasing, distribution and clinical pharmacy services
  6. NUCLEAR PHARMACY
  7. THE PHYSICAL PLANT AND ITS EQUIPMENT
  8. INVESTIGATIONAL USE OF DRUGS
  9. HEALTH ACCESSORIES
  10. SURGICAL SUPPLIES
