World Water Day 2025: How CUST Conserve Water Resources?

Water is essential for life. It is also important to manage the Earth’s temperature, including dynamics, ecosystems, and geological processes. Furthermore, the human body is 70% water; without water, no living being can survive. However, due to mindless water usage and rapid climate change, the world is facing a threat of water scarcity. To spread awareness and to promote water safety, World Water Day is observed every year. Themes are new, with every year, World Water Day 2025 comes up with Glacier Preservation!
World Water Day 2025
World Water Day has been annually observed for the last 32 years under the UN’s international observance plan. The aim of observing a day for water is to highlight the importance of fresh water. Unfortunately, our Earth is on the verge of experiencing a severe water shortage in the coming years, if no proactive approach is taken.
Already, the world is facing alarming water scarcity across many parts. Only 3% of the water is fresh. Moreover, the major source of fresh water is glaciers and snow that melt down into the rivers and sea, and are melting too fast from the natural frequency. This means, in the long run, there would be no glaciers left behind.
To address this alarming condition, the year 2025 has been designated as the ‘glaciers’. Hence, the 2025 is an Internation Year of Glacier Preservation- (IYGP). UN aims to address the related issues.
Following the same pattern of glacier preservation- the world water day 2025 has also a theme of ‘glacier preservation.’

Importance of Glaciers in the Ecology of the World
Glaciers are a major part of the Earth’s natural water cycle. If due to any reason, the glaciers are out of the equation, the water cycle would be damaged insanely. That would be a direct threat to life on this planet. Because 70% of our planet is water, all living beings—plants, humans, animals, and species depend upon it.
On the contrary, only 3% of the water is fresh water which is responsible to continue all the activities effectively. But the threat comes here— Global Warming!
Due to the climate change, global warming is speeding up. There are numerous cause and effects of this environmental problem demanding for a solution.
Global Warming causes a rise in the temperatures of the earth. As a result, water glaciers are melting fast than ever! Causing a huge amount of water going to waste. Without any preservation.
Therefore, the World Water Day 2025 aims to focus on these problems:
- Water cycles are becoming extreme and difficult to predict due to the fast melting of glaciers.
- With these unpredictable melt-water flows, a billion of people are facing environmental challenges like floods, droughts, landslides, with a rise in sea levels resulting in damaged eco-system of the earth.
- Henceforth, emergency steps are required to control global warming, and to manage and preserve the meltwater we are acquiring from glacier melt-down.
Sustainability Goals & Scope of Effectiveness
UN has a plan to deal with global warming through active participation for environmental sustainability. Water is also a part of these sustainable goals—the UN goal no.6 addresses water scarcity and addresses the conservation practices around the globe.
It is important because the world population is withdrawing water more than ever. According to the World Water Day Annual report 2025, we came to know the following.
- Agriculture and industrial sectors are the major sectors around the world, responsible for water withdrawal.
- Well-off countries, with higher income withdraws more water in industrial usage. While the low-income countries withdraw most water out of the agricultural sector.
- 25 countries are facing extreme water stress, and these countries have a quarter of the total population.
Furthermore, the report also addresses the steps to meet Sustainable Development Goal No. 6.
Some of the steps include the following targets.
- Safe drinking water
- Access to sanity and hygiene
- Improvement of water quality
- Optimisation of water-usage efficiency
- Transboundary water corporation
- Managing the water-related ecosystems
- International Corporation
How does CUST Conserve Water Resources?
CUST is ranked as the No. 1 private university in Pakistan due to its efficiency in learning modules, research and development (R&D), and remarkable contributions to sustainability. Let’s reflect on what CUST did for water conservation in 2024.
CUST undertakes a regular set of activities, they perform across the university campus to ensure healthy water usage. Special focus is set on hygiene and sanity conditions, with efforts to optimise the water availability and use efficiency. During the last year, following activities were successfully conducted over the CUST campus.
- Water Filtration Competition
- Awareness Campaign on Responsible Water Consumption
- Occupational Health & Safety
- Health & Safety in Hydel Power Plants
- Nuclear Power Plant
- Themed Activity on Green Infrastructure
For comprehensive details, you can read the whole activities held at CUST website. You can also access the document here.
What can You & I do?
Water is essential for all. Governments, institutions, and bodies are working as a whole, but no effort would be effective without the participation of the common man! Yes, you and I can make big changes with our small, constant, mindful water spending. Some of the steps we can incorporate into our lives are as follows.
Turn off the faucets when not in use. Can do in dishwashing, teeth brushing, and laundering.
- Use Washing machines and dishwashers only when the load is full.
- Water your plants mindfully.
- Use Effective flush systems in your toilets.
- Avoid frequent car washes, lawn wash, and similar activities.
- Repair water leaking taps and points in your home and offices.
- Take small showers.
Reminder
World Water Day 2025 was observed on March 22. This observance was in continuity to the International Water Day dedication by the UN. The major water source for our earth- Glaciers are at risk. Due to fast melting, water cycles are at risk globally. We all must work effectively.
